Adequan
This is an injection for pets that can help a great deal with certain kinds of cat arthritis and dog arthritis. You give the pet injections twice a week for four weeks. It is favored by many vets because of the immediate relief it provides - the other option for treatment is usually a nutritional supplement, but those don't work with all pets. It's also been used to treat urinary tract disease in cats.
How does it work?
Over time, the joints in your pet's body will wear against the cartilage, which is the stuff in between your bones at the joints that cushions them as you move them back and forth. A lot of cases of canine and feline arthritis are caused by the gradual destruction of this cushion of cartilage. It contains a molecule called polysulfated glycosaminoglycan. Basically, what this does is two things:
1) it helps rebuild the cartilage - the cushion is not gone forever, and the cat or dog can rebuild it. However, it needs the raw materials, and polysulfated glycosaminoglycan is one of those.
2) it stops the destruction of cartilage by other enzymes. It has an anti-inflammatory effect, which stops both the pain of arthritis and the additional damage that inflammation can cause.
Are there side effects?
Yes, there have been some side effects reported. These include diarrhea and increased bleeding - you should be careful about giving it to any pet that has had bleeding-related diseases in the past (if the pet has a tendency to excessive bleeding, then you must be very cautious).
Where can I buy it?
