Dogs need to have regular flea control efforts to get rid of the health problems associated with fleas, which can include various parasites such as worms along with anemia and other dangerous diseases. Advantage flea medicine gives you a good way to deal with your flea problems. For dogs specifically, it's especially useful because of the virtually immediate effect it has on the flea nervous system. Advantage will damage the brains of fleas, preventing them from biting, and it does it within a few minutes. That gives your dog (and you) immediate relief, which is a big plus.

Using Advantage With A Dog

Advantage is mainly compared to Frontline in determining which flea medicine you'll want to buy. Advantage has a few pluses: you can bathe your dog after using it, whereas with Frontline you have to wait a few days. You can get immediate effects, because of the prevention of biting (they take a little longer to die, but the bites are the source of all problems fleas cause). The minuses as compared to Frontline - Advantage has virtually no effect on ticks, whereas Frontline can kill them at least moderately effectively. If you're having tick problems too, you should probably go with Frontline. Frontline also can last a little longer - if you're just using it for fleas, it can go several months. Advantage is roughly monthly application. That's not that big a deal, but it might be if you're forgetful about applying it. Both kill fleas very effectively, and you might want to talk to your vet to see if he or she has a recommendation for you. If you've got a dog, you'll need to make sure to buy the right dosage depending on its weight - under 10 pounds, 11-20 pounds, 21-55 pounds, and over 55 pounds. If you decide to go with Frontline instead, the weight system for dogs is a little different - under 22 pounds, 23-44 pounds, 45-88 pounds, and 89-132 pounds. This might make Frontline a better bet if you've got a larger dog just because you can tailor the dose a little more effectively.
