If you've got both flea and tick problems, then one medicine you might want to consider is Frontline, a good flea control product that can deal with ticks as well. Most of the other flea medicines don't really do anything at all about ticks. Many people are also wary about combining two different chemical products to be able to get rid of both fleas and ticks - I suppose you could talk to your vet about doing it, but it's just not good to be exposing your pet to that many pesticides at the same time. The benefit of Frontline is that you don't have to - it will kill ticks as well as fleas, so you can have a comprehensive pest treatment option that just uses a single medicine.

Frontline, if used only for fleas, only has to be applied every few months - but if you're trying to get at ticks as well, you'll need to use it monthly (it takes a higher concentration to be able to kill ticks). Ticks are still a little problematic because you'll often have to actually pull them off the dog or cat yourself - they'll die, but they'll die latched on with their teeth, and so you'll have to get rid of them manually. If your pet is getting ticks, you definitely need to do something about it. Fleas can cause serious health problems for your pet, but it's more rare to actually have something hurt you. Ticks are a different story - they carry Lyme disease, and you don't want to be getting a serious health problem just because you didn't treat your pet. If you use Frontline, make sure to use it regularly - follow the guidelines for ticks, and apply it as required. If you let it slip, it won't be effective against ticks, and you don't want to be risking your health.

Dosing Information: As with any flea control product, you need to weigh your pet first to figure out which version of Frontline to buy, because they are sold according to pet weight. The categories for dogs are: under 22 pounds, 23-44 pounds, 45-88 pounds, and 89-132 pounds. For cats, there isn't much weight variation and so there is only one product version for you to worry about.
