Nolvasan Ointment and Shampoo

Nolvasan is a disinfectant that comes in a number of forms: shampoo, ointment, and otic cleansing solution that you pour onto a wound. It's used to kill bacteria and fungal infections, which makes it a good ear cleaner, a shampoo if the cat or dog has a skin problem relating to fungus, or as a sort of Neosporin for pets that you can put on minor wounds to keep them from getting infected. It uses chlorhexidine diacetate as the active ingredient, which can kill about 60 different common kinds of microorganisms.

Are there any side effects to Nolvasan? Is it safe for my pet?

There aren't any common side effects, but you should watch for hypersensitivity, because some pets can be allergic to it. Redness, swelling, or irritation of the skin mean you need to contact a vet.

Nolvasan Otic Cleansing Solution (16 oz) is for general cleaning of ears of dogs and cats to aid in removal of debris. Dosage and Administration: For Use in Cleaning Ears: Apply liberally into the ear canal. Gently massage the base of the ear. Carefully clean excess fluid from accessible portion of external ear with cotton. Repeat one to three times daily, if necessary, depending on condition of ear and amount of debris to be removed. Active Ingredient(s): Contains special solvent and surfactant.

Fort Dodge Grooming Shampoo Antiseptic with Conditioner Active Ingredient(s): Contains 0.5% chlorhexidine acetate. Indications: NOLVASANŽ Shampoo cleans and restores luster to the hair coat of dogs, cats and horses. NOLVASANŽ Shampoo has excellent cleansing and deodorizing properties. Directions: Wet animal thoroughly with warm water. Apply enough shampoo to make a lather, adding more water if necessary. Massage into the hair coat for 2 to 5 minutes. Rinse hair and skin thoroughly with clean water. A second application of shampoo may be applied if necessary. Dry thoroughly. Precaution(s): Store at controlled room temperature 15° to 30°C (59° to 86°F). Protect from freezing. Caution(s): Avoid contact with eyes. Keep out of reach of children. Warning(s): Not to be used on horses intended for food.
